Recapping Our Favorite Fictional Magicians of All Time

While we love to celebrate our real-life magicians, sometimes it’s fun to think about our favorite fictional magical characters and the books that bring them to life for us. Here are some of our favorite fictional magicians of all time.

Gandalf

Gandalf the Grey (and later Gandalf the White) is a wizard from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The books are set in the fictional Middle Earth and follow the story of the One Ring of Power and the quest to destroy it.

In The Hobbit, Gandalf befriends Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, and convinces him to go on a journey with him and a group of dwarves. These dwarves are on a quest to steal back a hoard of treasure from a giant dragon named Smaug. On this journey, Bilbo finds a magical ring, which is later discovered to be The One Ring.

In The Lord of the Rings, Bilbo’s nephew Frodo is chosen to carry the One Ring to Mordor to destroy it. He is accompanied by eight others in a group led by Gandalf to take the ring and throw it into the fires of Mount Doom.

Albus Dumbledore

It is hard to miss all the hype around the Harry Potter series, so there is no doubt that one of its characters has made our list. Albus Dumbledore is the well-known headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is considered one of the most powerful wizards of his time. Over the course of the seven books, we see him act as a mentor to Harry and watch him lead a rebellion against the most dark wizard to have ever existed, Lord Voldemort.

Dr. Stephen Strange

If you are a fan of Marvel movies, you have likely heard of Dr. Stephen Strange, who, aside from his own movies, has been a part of many of the Avengers stories as well.

Dr. Strange was a neurosurgeon who, after a terrible car accident, was unable to use his hands. After many failed treatments, he headed east to seek out a non-traditional method of healing and ended up at Kamar-Taj, where he was trained in magic by The Ancient One. Dr. Strange currently serves as Sorcerer Supreme and is Earth’s primary protector from any magical or mystical threats.

Merlin

Told in various stories throughout history, Merlin is known for being a wizard and advisor to King Arthur. There are many different versions of King Arthur’s tales, each painting Merlin in a different light, but he is commonly known for his ability to shapeshift (as we see in Disney’s The Sword in the Stone).

Raistlin Majere

A fictional character from the Dragonlance (based on D&D) series, Raistlin Majere is considered the most powerful mage to have ever lived.  At 20, he was the youngest mage to take the Test of High Sorcery, and he was responsible for the defeat of the Queen of Darkness. Dragonlance is one of the most popular fantasy book series based on Dungons & Dragons.
